How long do migraines last? What Is Chronic Migraine?

How long does a migraine last-this question is asked by many people who have experienced a migraine headache. The pain can be so strong that it prevents normal functioning, and during an attack one thinks only of one thing-that the pain should go away as soon as possible. How long can a migraine last? What is chronic migraine? How long does it take to treat this disease?

How long does a migraine last?

Migraine is a disease manifested by a strong, persistent, throbbing headache, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia. Migraine is a neurological disorder of unknown etiology. According to some theories, it is caused by a disorder in the secretion of neurotransmitters by the brain.

Other theories suggest that migraine attacks are associated with cerebral vasculitis. All this makes migraines not treat causally, but symptomatically.

In addition, migraine is a disease that occurs periodically for most of life. Migraine attacks have varying degrees of severity and occur with varying frequency, most often found from 1 to 3 attacks of the disease per month. A migraine attack lasts from 4 to 72 hours. It is estimated that the average duration of such an attack is 18 hours. When the first symptoms of migraine appear, symptomatic treatment should be started. Patients then take anti-migraine medicines, which relieve pain and reduce other symptoms such as vomiting and photophobia. It is worth noting that women are more likely to suffer from migraine. It is estimated that the disease affects 15 percent of the population.

How long can a chronic migraine last?

Migraine is an incurable disease. Seizures occur periodically and can persist throughout life. If the attacks of the disease are very strong, occur more often, and the emergency treatment does not bring the expected result, then this may mean that the migraine has turned from an episodic to a chronic one. Doctors diagnose chronic migraine in people who experience migraine headaches for at least 15 days a month for three consecutive months.

How long do migraines last What Is Chronic Migraine

Patients suffering from chronic migraine take prophylactic drugs between attacks. Effective in the treatment of chronic migraine are drugs used to treat other diseases, especially hypertension, epilepsy and depression. They help to reduce the frequency of attacks of the disease. Doctors prescribe to patients m.in. beta-blockers, used to treat hypertension, which act antagonistically to beta-adrenergic receptors. Another common medicine used to treat chronic migraine is valproic acid, an anti-epileptic medicine. It is worth noting that in addition to chronic migraine, there is also a drug headache, which is of a chronic nature and occurs as a result of prolonged use of painkillers.

Migraine-how long does it last after taking the medicine?

During a migraine attack, patients take painkillers on an ad hoc basis. In case of moderate pain, non - opioid drugs are used-paracetamol, ibuprofen, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and tolfenamic acid. Acetylsalicylic acid and ibuprofen are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

They show not only analgesic, but also anti-inflammatory. They have a rapid analgesic effect, which occurs about 30 minutes after taking the drug and lasts up to 6 hours. Then take another dose. In contrast, tolfenamic acid brings relief about half an hour after taking the drug, but usually one dose of the drug during the day is enough.

Paracetamol belonging to non-opioid analgesics, brings relief a little later. The analgesic effect is noticeable after about an hour after taking paracetamol and lasts for 5-6 hours.

If migraine pain is severe, patients take tryptans or ergot alkaloid derivatives, which are available only on prescription. For example, sumatriptan, which belongs to the group of tryptans, brings relief about 30 minutes after taking and, as a rule, one dose of the drug is enough. In case of very severe pain, the dose can be repeated after two hours after taking the first.

Migraine-how long does it take to find the right treatment?

It may take months to establish effective treatment. It all depends on the intensity of the headache, the frequency of seizures, the duration of each attack and other individual factors. Even if two people experience the same type of pain, with the same intensity, their body can react completely differently to the same medicine.it is also worth remembering that some types of migraine can be resistant to the action of painkillers, which makes it difficult for the doctor to choose an effective remedy.

I have been taking cafergot/ergotamine for more than 5 years, and this is the only medicine that really relieves headaches of a small cluster to a full-blown migraine. I don't even want to try another one because it works so fast, with no side effects.
